Fundamentals of Not-for-Profit Financial Matters
(9:55–10:50 am)
Presented by: Rhona Kwiram, CPA
As a board member, one of your key roles is financial oversight of the not-for-profit you are serving. But not-for-profit financial statements can, at times, be complex and confusing and knowing the questions you should be asking and what you should be monitoring can be downright daunting. This session will help you to come away feeling much more confident that you are fulfilling one of the most critical obligations you have as a board member.

Break (10:50–11:05 am)

What Board Members Need to Know About Their Role in Fundraising
(11:05–12:00 pm)
Presented by: Jim Shapiro, Co-founder, The Better Fundraising Co.
If you are like most not-for-profit board members, your mind starts swimming when you think about the fundraising needs of your organization. This session is designed to teach you the fundraising basics every board should know in order to effectively serve, lead and fund their charitable work. You will learn:

  • Why fundraising is important
  • The difference between fundraising and “friendraising”
  • How the board can be involved in retaining and acquiring donors
  • The best practices for raising money annually
  • The board’s role in fundraising

Fundamentals of the IRS Form 990
(12:50–1:45 pm)
Presented by: Kathryn Okimoto, CPA, Principal, Clark Nuber PS
What’s new coming out of the IRS and what’s important for you to know? When should you be worried about your tax-exempt status? What do you need to know about the Form 990? This session is intended to answer these questions and should provide board members with tools and tips for safeguarding the organization’s tax-exempt status, as well as an overview of key areas on the Form 990.

Break (1:45–1:55 pm)

Risk Management
(1:55-2:50 pm)
Presented by: Rob Fleming, CPA, Senior Consultant, Clark Nuber PS
Risk management is so much broader than just financial risk. We see organizations in the news for a variety of things such as a breach in their cybersecurity system, or fraud, or any number of other negative reasons. How does a board member understand the key risks the organization faces and determine whether management has a plan for mitigating those risks? This session will explore this vital topic and guide you into ways to identify and monitor the risks of your organization.
